Kathryn Tyler is a social entrepreneur and co-founder of ​ Digital Mums ​ which uses pioneering training to help every mum achieve their perfect work life balance by upskilling them with in-demand digital skills. Her vision is that all mums and businesses achieve #WorkThatWorks. In recognition of Digital Mums’ contribution to reducing maternal discrimination and its positive impact on the digital world, Kathryn was this year named Red Woman of the Year, Marie Claire Future Shaper and one of 40 women over 40 currently shaping the internet by the Telegraph’s Stella magazine. We caught up with Kathryn to ask her what a typical day looked like. I wake up... At around 7:30am and the first thing I do is grab my phone and check Twitter for the morning headlines. At this point my Miniature English Bull Terrier, Cooper, sniper crawls up under the duvet to say hello and we snuggle while I do some tweeting and listen to the Today Programme. However, 'maternity' hasn't always resonated within the realm of fashion. Historically, pregnancy was expected to be fashionably hidden rather than fashionably celebrated. 1595 The idea of maternity fashion first started in the Baroque period. The garment was called the ‘Adrienne’. It featured an empire waist, skirt and several layers. Prior to this bumps were to be hidden, not shown. 1837 During the Victorian era pregnancy was something to be concealed. The maternity corset was constructed in order to accommodate this. The design was structured with whalebone with the intention of minimizing the appearance of a bump. 1920s Softer silhouettes with dropped waistlines emerge during this time.
