The Conversation - Mathilde Kubisiak
Mama-to-be, Mathilde Kubisiak, is an interior designer and the founder of MK Design London. We talked to her about her love for interior design, how she has decorated her baby’s nursery and what inspired her to set up her own company.
Congratulations on your pregnancy! How far along are you and how are you feeling?
I am now 35 weeks pregnant and in the final stretch of my pregnancy. I am still surprise how much I love being pregnant. It has been a magical and truly extraordinary experience. I think this last month might be the hardest as we just can’t wait to meet him now!
Could you give us a brief overview of the work you do at MK Design London?
I am the founder of MK Design. I offer a fusion style of my French heritage and my love for Nordic design. MK Design provides a full range of Interior Design services with a select team of designers and contractors. I provide imaginative but affordable designs and my work ranges from advice on single rooms right up to managing whole commercial refurbishments.
How did you get into interior design?
I come from a fine art background but I have always been very passionate about interiors and space. In 2012 I graduated from the University of the Arts of London as an interior designer. I also specialise in Feng Shui cures to makes your home more efficient and help you achieve and attract everything you desire and reconnect to your true self.
What was it like to set up your own company?
It was a very natural process, I love learning new skills and working with very talented people to create unique sustainable design solutions for both commercials and residential projects.
The new nursery for your little baby boy looks beautiful! How did you go about designing that room?
This was a very exciting project. I thought about practicality first, with all the different stations you might need to make your life easy with a new born (changing, breastfeeding, sleeping…). I used a lot of texture to create a very nurturing and cosy room, with a neutral colour palette. I wanted to create a calm and peaceful sanctuary for him and for me too.
Was it the first time you’ve designed a nursery? If so, what surprised you about the design process?
I have done a few nursery and kid's bedrooms design, but I had to admit I particularly love this one as it was the perfect opportunity to use my favourite designers and iconic kid items like the timeless bunny MIFFY lamp or the emblematic wooden birds designed by Jan Christian Delfs for Normann Copenhagen.
What tips would you give to other mamas-to-be for decorating a nursery?
Keep it simple with smart storages. Having lots of handy baskets is perfect to hide kids toys and stay organised. I would also try to keep to a neutral, soothing scheme with max of two colours.
As a working mama, how do you think you will find the work/mama balance?
I honestly have no idea, my priority for now is the baby and I will improvise along the way.
Any other tips or tricks for new mamas, or mamas-to-be that you have learnt so far?
To listen to yourself, you know best what’s good for you and for your baby and try not to worry too much…but I guess that's easy to say!
